Sad

Time passes and tears dry
The heart learns to cope
The eyes learn to lie
And life grasps at hope.

Fears of pain still prevail
Loss kills all bravery
Love was set up to fail
Truth succumbs to slavery.

If all that passed was true
If all of this was meant to be
You left me, I forgave you
What more has time to see?

Birthday

I can imagine a hundred ways
Of wishing you well;
And anxiety has me
Under her breathless spell.

I concoct words to try
To see, if you feel the same;
But you must have by now
Quite buried my name.

I remain your first love
So, I wish to wish you:
Here’s hoping then
You find another love this true.

(I know you’ve read my text
And yet you choose not to reply,
You let me down one last time

I now will cease to try.)

Food

I have eaten today,
Today, I had food;
My stomach is full,
The day has been good.

I can’t imagine what it is
To be hungry and lost,
Aching to eat my fill;
Yet dreading the cost.

I can’t understand how
Peaceful protests are stopped,
How water canyons are used
And tear bombs are dropped.

You have food at home,
Because someone toils in the field –
Do what must be done –
See their wounds are healed!

You have eaten today
Because of the ones in grief,
How can you not pray they smile,
Or hope for their relief?
