Unafraid

There was a time, not long since, when this bed
Was where love, dreams and promises were made.
Now, as nights pass into virulent days,
And I get into cold sheets, I‘m afraid.

Your weight was my anchor to what we had;
But love has sunk into this large, cold bed;
It drowned, somewhere within, as you left it –
And I could save just memories instead.

I can’t even catch your smell in these sheets;
I wish you had loved enough and had stayed;
But you thought that love brings you happiness,
So, fled where you think you’ll stay unafraid.

Last Laugh

I can’t recall when I laughed last,
When I was happy and free,
When I felt nothing haunting me
And I forgot hurts from the past.

Pleasant times move so very fast;
And I‘m left with clipped memory
Of pain that won’t let me be
Nor help recall when I laughed last.

You Couldn’t Tell

When we were young and when we loved,
I believed it all to be true,
And maybe you believed it, too.

When you left and when you promised,
Fidelity was not deceit,
Spanning oceans seemed no great feat.

But society had concerns,
Ambition had its own power,
Love became matter of past’s hour.

If I could say something to you,
Following two and twenty years,
I still could not without these tears.

I’m too old to call this weakness,
I guess I loved and much too well,
It was just tragic you couldn’t tell.
