To Dadan

I rested my cares on your heart oft times,
When I was young and when I was old.
I try to remember you in my rhymes:
Your face and the warmth in your arms’ hold.
You were my Lady of Mercy, my strength;
You were my red when I was in blue;
My story-listener – for any length;
You were my love – by just being you!

I thought childhood died as you passed away,
For each innocent mem’ry is linked to you;
But mem’ry retains, despite time’s dark sway,
Innocent past can’t die by lessons new!

I remember your face, the past is here,
And though you are out of reach, you are near.

To Ganapati.

Thou were brought home today with great ado,
Hearts welcomed thee with music and great love,
As I walked toward thee my wonder grew,
T’see rain greeting thy birth from Heaven above.
Clamour rang joyously through the night air,
And thy eyes looked on all through many veils,
To look on thee was to kill my despair,
Thou carried me away from life’s sordid tales.
Gold laden, curved trunk – my elephant God!
Remover of obstacles – wisest of all!
For moments it was just me and my Lord,
His eyes spoke and my heart answered His call.
I thank thee for this and thy knowing smile,
And for walking with me for a short while.

18th September

To Anand

In the heat of the sun, you came with me,
Forsaking ties that could bind you right fast,
And all that I could think of, so vainly,
Was if what you feel for me could e’er last.
You looked to my feet, when I looked ahead,
Trying t’see what destiny has in store,
For your thoughts, so simply with actions wed,
Were to prevent my falling down once more.
In the dark, you held me with promises,
Since I wept, for I would not see you soon.
Oh, to make them last! Those words and kisses
And that coolness of that pale, summer moon!
But, I trust you, so I write this in rhyme:
I’ll let my heart follow love one more time.
